Talk Is Cheap

Written in my head on I-10 between Kerrville and Baton Rouge. I couldn't wait to get checked-in to the hotel to write it down.

She said she would love me forever
And always be true.
So when she found another man, I didn't know what to do.
Then one day I saw her new lover and I pulled him aside.
He said "She's gonna love me forever, and we'll be just fine."

Talk is cheap,
Lies are free.
People will tell you
What you want to believe.
Talk is cheap,
Talk is cheap.

The preacher on TV is telling me he's got a plan.
He says "Let's build a theme park
and we'll call the place 'Jesusland'.
You can pay for redemption
and never mind how much it costs,
Because with every donation
I'll send you this little prayer cloth."

They will dazzle you with dialogue
And tell you just what you want to hear.
They will baffle you and babble on--
You know that they're lying because their mouth's are in gear.
Talk is cheap.

The candidate pleads for my vote,
He says "Here's what I'll do.
I'm gonna lower your taxes and
ban the bad books from our schools.
I'll make it illegal for people who don't think like us.
Just look at my record,
You know I'm a man you can trust."
